On Moonberry Lake

“On Moonberry Lake” by Holly Varni tells the story of Cora Matthews after an unexpected ended engagement and her mother’s even less expected death. She inherits a broken down lakefront cottage as an inheritance, but to her dismay she can’t just sell it and run. There are conditions attached.

She ends up meeting a host of very quirky neighbours, but in the process finds a wilder version of family than she ever could have imagined.

This book was a delight. It was full of nuggets of wisdom from some of the older characters who’ve been around Moonberry Lake a long time. It was full of ways for Cora to open her eyes to new experiences and see people she wouldn’t have acknowledged prior to her time there in a whole new light.

It reminded me a little bit of Irene Hannon’s Hope Harbour novels — especially Sam and all his well kept secrets and words of wisdom. I found he reminded me of Charlie from Hannon’s novels. So if you have read any of those books and liked them, I think you’ll like “On Moonberry Lake.”

This was a great, quick read for me, full of funny, charming characters and good development of many of them. It’s nice to have a book where many characters get good development, not just a couple.

5 stars.
